2024: In a significant move to provide relief to the trading community, the leaders of the Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation (KTMF), including Chairman Haji Mushtaq Ahmed Darial, President Mohammad Sadiq, and General Secretary Mohammad Altaf Dar, have called for the introduction of the ‘Tajir Dost Amnesty Scheme’ in electricity bill payments.
During a meeting held today, the KTMF leaders highlighted the challenges faced by small and medium traders due to high power tariffs and arrears that have accumulated over time. They stressed that the trading community including all business fraternity already grappling with the economic downturn and post-pandemic recovery, is unable to bear the burden of exorbitant electricity bills.
The proposed amnesty scheme aims to waive off interest and penalties on outstanding bills and provide traders with a structured payment plan for the principal amount. This initiative, they emphasized, would act as a lifeline for traders including all business fraternity and ensure a smoother relationship between consumers and the Power Development Department (PDD).
Chairman Haji Mushtaq Ahmed Darial remarked, "The trading community has always been the backbone of J&K’s economy. A scheme like this would boost their morale and sustain businesses during challenging times.”
President Mohammad Sadiq added, "We urge Honorable Chief Minister For J&K , Minister For Power, the Lieutenant Governor’s administration to consider this proposal on humanitarian grounds and engage in dialogue with stakeholders to implement the scheme.”
General Secretary Mohammad Altaf Dar reiterated the need for collaborative efforts, stating, "It’s time for policymakers to acknowledge the plight of traders including all business fraternity and extend their support through initiatives like the ‘Tajir Dost Amnesty Scheme’.”
The KTMF leaders remain committed to safeguarding the interests of the business community and look forward to a positive response from the government.
