Waqf Amendment Bill Sails Through Lok Sabha Amid Fierce Opposition
Government Assures Transparency in Waqf Property Management, Opposition Cries Foul
New Delhi, April 3: The Lok Sabha has passed the contentious Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, aimed at streamlining the management of Waqf properties in India. The bill, which was passed with 288 votes in favour and 232 against, is set to become a law after it is approved by the Rajya Sabha.
The passage of the bill was marked by fierce opposition from various parties, who alleged that it was an attempt to attack the rights of minorities. Congress Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi argued that the bill had not been adequately discussed with minority representatives and raised concerns over Clause 3, which defines individuals practising Islam.
Union Minorities Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju defended the bill, stating that it will benefit minorities and ensure the welfare of poor Muslims and women. Home Minister Amit Shah also defended the bill, stating that the government has no intention of interfering in Muslims’ religious matters and is solely driven by the aim of transparent administration of Waqf properties.
The bill’s passage has sparked a heated debate, with many questioning its implications on minority rights and the management of Waqf properties. As the bill heads to the Rajya Sabha for approval, it remains to be seen how it will fare in the upper house.
