Srinagar, Mar 7 : Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, in his budget address, reaffirmed his government’s commitment to press freedom in Jammu and Kashmir. He stressed the role of the media in democracy and vowed to enhance press infrastructure, facilitate access to information, and safeguard journalists’ rights.
A key highlight of his statement was the announcement to revive and support the Press Club in Jammu and Srinagar. Abdullah emphasized the need for a dedicated space where journalists can collaborate and contribute to public discourse.
The assurance comes amid growing concerns about press freedom in the region. Media professionals face various challenges, including restricted access to information and security issues.
Omar Abdullah reiterated his administration’s dedication to creating a secure and transparent environment for the media. "A free press is essential for democracy, and we will ensure journalists can work without fear or restrictions,” he asserted.
The media fraternity remains hopeful that the government will translate its commitment into action, with the revival of press clubs seen as a crucial step toward fostering a more open and independent journalistic landscape in Jammu and Kashmir.
