If Tamil Nadu and Karnataka can pass resolutions against the Waqf Bill, why is J&K, with 50 Muslim MLAs, silent?: Waheed Parra

Pulwama, April 07 :- Waheed ur Rehman Parra, the legislative party leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and MLA from Pulwama, launched a scathing attack on the National Conference (NC) and the Jammu & Kashmir government over their silence on the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
Parra described the inaction as a “betrayal” of the Muslim community, highlighting that Jammu & Kashmir, despite being India’s only Muslim-majority region with 50 Muslim MLAs, has failed to stand up for its people by not passing a resolution against the Bill.
“If Tamil Nadu and Karnataka can pass resolutions opposing the Waqf Bill, why is J&K silent?” Parra asked. “This silence, in the face of a bill that erodes Muslim religious rights by handing over greater control of Waqf properties to the government, amounts to a tacit endorsement.”
He sharply criticized the NC for what he called “double-speak,” alleging that while NC MLAs stage protests for public consumption, their leadership, including the Chief Minister and NC patron, welcomes the very Union Minister who introduced the contentious bill.
“This hypocrisy is a grave insult to the Muslim community,” Parra said. “First they surrendered on Article 370, then on statehood, and now on religious autonomy. No resolution on the Waqf Bill is nothing short of silent approval.”
Parra urged the J&K Assembly Speaker to initiate an immediate discussion on the bill and to pass a formal resolution condemning it. He called for solidarity with other states that have taken firm stands in defense of minority rights.
He also rejected any procedural justification offered by the NC for not addressing the issue in the Assembly. “This is a weak excuse. Hiding behind technicalities only exposes a lack of political will. The NC must stop playing safe and start standing up for the rights and dignity of the people it claims to represent,” Parra concluded.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, has sparked controversy across several states, with critics alleging that it seeks to centralize control over religious endowments and undermines the autonomy of Muslim religious institutions.
