Srinagar, April 14: National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah has voiced strong opposition to the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Act, calling it unconstitutional. He also backed the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Speaker’s decision to disallow discussion on the law, citing its sub-judice status.
“This Bill goes against the spirit of the Constitution,” Abdullah told reporters on Monday.
“The Speaker took the right step by not allowing debate, as the matter is currently being heard in the Supreme Court. We can take it up once the Court delivers its verdict.”
Abdullah also took a swipe at the opposition parties in the Assembly, accusing them of indulging in blind opposition. “They are not engaging in constructive criticism; they are opposing just for the sake of it,” he said.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on April 2 and in the Rajya Sabha on April 3. Despite protests and concerns, the bill cleared both Houses of Parliament and received the President’s assent on April 5, officially becoming law.
"The amended law has already sparked legal challenges, and the outcome in the Supreme Court is likely to shape the future debate around Waqf properties and their management in India.
