Pahalgam Aftermath: Shikaras Sit Empty as Visitor Numbers Plummet

Srinagar, May 23 : Dal Lake still glistens under the sun, but the silence on its surface tells a different story. Shikaras, once busy ferrying tourists, now drift idle. The aftermath of the Pahalgam militant attack and rising Indo-Pak tensions has left Kashmir’s tourism industry reeling.

Kashmir’s iconic attractions, from the tranquil houseboats to the vibrant Nishat Garden, have witnessed a near-collapse in visitor numbers. Once drawing over 11,000 tourists daily, the Valley is now seeing just a few hundred, leaving livelihoods shattered across the region.

Local houseboat owners, gardeners, and contractors shared their anguish, revealing how the crisis has hit the poorest the hardest. Many are entirely dependent on tourism and now face an uncertain summer.

Tourism stakeholders have appealed to concerned agencies, urging them to publicly reassure Indian travellers that Kashmir is safe. They believe a message from the top could turn the tide. CNS
