JDU STATE PRESIDENT SLAMS OPPOSITION OVER WAQF BILL: "Misleading Muslims for Political Gain”
G.M. Shaheen Defends Government's Aim to Bring Transparency to Waqf System
SRINAGAR, April 2: Janata Dal United (JDU) State President G.M. Shaheen has strongly criticized the Opposition for resisting the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, accusing them of misleading Muslims for political gain. Shaheen defends the government’s aim to bring transparency to the Waqf system, which has been a point of contention.
The Opposition has criticized the bill, citing concerns over minority rights and religious freedom. They argue that the bill infringes on the rights of Muslims and undermines the federal system. Congress MP KC Venugopal denounced the bill as "draconian” and an "attack on the Constitution.”
Interestingly, reports suggest that JDU may actually oppose the bill in parliament, highlighting the complexity of the issue. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board revealed that JDU and TDP have assured Muslim bodies of their opposition to the bill.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill proposes significant changes to Waqf governance, including the renaming of the Waqf Act, 1995, as the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development Act, 1995. The bill aims to bring transparency and accountability to Waqf management, but its opponents see it as an attack on Muslim rights and autonomy.
